The European Central Bank lifted its main interest rate by a quarter point, making it the first major Western central bank to begin reversing the easy money policy put in place during the credit crunch. The move comes just a day after Portugal’s Prime Minister José Sócrates said he was applying to the European Commission for a rescue package which could reach as much as €80 billion. The ECB increased its main refinancing rate to 1.25 per cent, as predicted by all economists surveyed in advance of the decision, in the first increase since 2008. The move came just 45 minutes after the Bank of England left its own key rate unchanged for the 25th straight month. The Bank held its main rate at 0.5 per cent despite presiding over 4.4 per cent inflation in Britain.
